Cancer is a malignant tumor where cells have acquired the capacity to invade adjacent tissue and is consider high risk by insurance companies. Cancer is the second most frequent cause of death after cardiovascular disease and as such is a high risk underwriting issue.
As a result, insurance companies generally will not consider life insurance for individuals with current cancer. In fact, until treatment has been completed, most insurance companies will postpone acceptance of an application. See an alternative below at guarantee issue life insurance.
Further, companies will not accept an application if surgery or treatment is within a specific time frame or is incomplete and that varies by type of cancer. An exception is basal cell carcinoma, insitu, where insurance can be immediately available. Guidelines follow as to the approximate waiting period after completion of treatment:
|Type Cancer||Yrs. Prior|
|Cervix Cancer (InSitu)||0|
|Cancer of the Ovary||3|
Note: Cancers outside those noted may be declined depending on the pathological details. Call with history, stage and treatment for phone quote: 800.778.2001
Accurate classification is not possible without a review of medical records. Some conditions are not currently insurable. And, there is a range of probable classifications and premiums for most histories. For example, if significant time has passed since the cancer treatment, e.g., 5-10 years, a regular or standard classification and premium may be available.
When individuals have health issues that make them uninsurable, the only policies available may be those without health questions called "guarantee issue life insurance" (click for more information).
